A recently released briefing note produced by House of Commons researchers for MPs on Arctic oil and gas drilling provides some useful insights into growing UK interest in the region. This follows on from an investigation by the Environment Audit Committee into the environmental protection of the Arctic.
Duncan Depledge and Klaus Dodds are currently investigating and auditing UK interest in the Arctic, including energy, strategic, shipping, cultural-historical, military, environmental, and scientific dimensions. Our first paper published in the RUSI Journal last year provided a general overview and a second paper due to be published in the same journal this summer considered the military dimension with specific reference to the UK-Norwegian relationship. Later work will examine the energy-environmental interface.
Duncan previously wrote about the military relationship on the RUSI blog.
